Setter

A crossover puzzle between some of my worlds, being a newbie crossword setter, an experienced book indexer, and the co-creator of National Indexing Day in 2017. Thanks again to my fine and fair test-solvers. More details are in the annotated solutions (with spoilers) and in my accompanying blog post at <https://baindex.org/2023/03/30/an-indexday-themed-cryptic-crossword-for-national-indexing-day-2023/>. #IndexDay, Happy!

Hi Pixie - what an interesting and clever puzzle. The annotations were very informative too, thanks. Favourites: 24a, a relatively rare beast, 27a (young female badger is excellent), 5d nice misdirection in the surface, 15d - good spot. Love the "pissed as a...." implication in 7d that hints at a different meaning of the defining word to the answer. Very Uxbridge English that one. 30d, best of the lot, don't think I've seen that exact device before. A couple of quibbles to follow.

Hello Pixie, there were some very interesting parts of this puzzle. You managed to introduce some humour along with the theme. Favourite clues include 18D, 7D, 13A, 32A and the 29A/11A and 21A combination. Happy index day to you too!

Thanks Pixie, a fun and educational puzzle. Favourite moments include 27a's "badger", 7d's "tiddly" creature, and 30d's seldom-seen "prime extracts" ... though star was the overall theming, Happy Indexing Day!

Nice puzzle, Pix, and a well incorporated theme - about which I know embarrassingly little! Favourites include 1a, 19a, 25a, 27a, 4d, 5d, 7d, 21d and 30d. As Fez says, not often seen but very nice device. Thanks. PM

Impressive density of theme content! :-) Needed your annotations to see the parsing of 5D, but that was just me.

That was good fun and inventively clued, thanks Pixie! Impressively themed to boot, and all the more satisfying for it. I particularly liked 13a (neat), 14a (clean), 16a (smooth), 21a (nice), 27a (cute), 5d (neat and smooth), 7d (fun), 17d (neat), 18d (very clean) and 28d (neat) - lovely stuff :)

I really enjoyed this and loved the theme! Some great and inventive definitions, especially 27a, and indicators, especially 30a. All hail the indexers!
