Cryptic crossword No 123

First time posting a puzzle so any feedback would be great ☺️

Sorry, but I can't say I had fun with this one, Strad. I persevered, however, 14D going in last, and a new word I'm unlikely to forget. The biggest issue for me, personally, was the obscurity of some of the answers - very much a me problem of course, but coupled with the mysterious theme and its definition-less clues, (neither of which I could resolve), and the lurch from obvious to incomprehensible, the puzzle became an uncomfortable tangle for me.

Thanks Strad. I would've benefitted from annotated solutions for this, as there are a few I can't parse. There are some nice ideas here, such as the 'two girls' in 3d. I think 16d is the most successful clue.
