Cryptic crossword No 1,430

Thanks Chameleon - didn't remember this from its publication but some lovely tricky stuff here. Favourites included: 1a, 3d/17d, 5d, 18d(!), and 14d (very enjoyably misleading wordplay)

Beaten by one letter right at the end. (Well, OK, that means the whole clue beat me but one letter sounds better to me!) Very smoothly clued throughout and a double take at 10a/2d until seeing the annotations). Faves too many to mention - a selection of them would be 1a, 9a, 12a, 18a, 3d/17d, 16d, 19d. 22d and 23d.
