Cryptic crossword No 2,140

Not familiar with 1d but it parsed well. In fact for me the parsing was very logical. Took a long time to work out 4d even with all the crossers in place. Still don’t get it. Struggled with Suffolk town but again the clue was quite okay. 27a held out. Liked the def but don’t get the wordplay. 23d same but I read the annotations so I see what you mean. Thanks.

Welcome, Prak, to MyC. Certainly someone who knows how to set a (quite tricky) puzzle so I'd be surprised if it's your first. I did not recognise the def for 23d but the answer was the only one that would fit and fortunately appeared in a controversial and fairly recent puzzle in the G. Like chracol, I am unfamiliar with 1d, knowing the word only in connection with the actress. Faves inc 9a, 21a, 26a and 7d. Thanks. PM

Thanks Prak, good fun. Quite tricky vocab in parts - eg nho 17a, 1d, 15d; 14d & 23d dredged up from somewhere, probably crosswords; and I've visited 7a but otherwise that may be a tad obscure - but all pretty fairly clued I think. Faves 9a, 25a, 26a, 19d & 20d. Spoilers ...
