Well, 2 of the 9 I'd not heard of, but got there in the end :-)

I suspect I hadn't heard of the same two as Skirwingle;, and was defeated by 7d (which I suppose I shouldn't have been, as it's an acrostic). A neat idea, and 23d in particular is a brilliant clue. And some enjoyable surfaces, notably the regurgitated budgie in 26a and the foodie 27a and 30a.

Good stuff, Piper - the names business was fun. Only one I'm not familiar with is 7d, but it was so precisely clued that it didn't matter - reminded me of one of those Everyman 'primarily' clues, which I like. I marked several other likes: 10a (tidy anagram), 13a (well hidden), 20a (a bit wordy but nicely done), 31a (simple wordplay, neat surface), 23d (great surface). Spoilers in reply...
