Hi ConManAU, and welcome to MyC! Thanks for the fun debut puzzle - lots to like here particularly 10a (neat), 19a (very neat), 25a (smooth), 31a (very smooth referential clue), 34a (lovely surface), 2d (neat), 6d (smooth) and 37d (neat). I have a few comments that I hope prove helpful...

Great puzzle - thank you. Not too easy - you had me with three of the clues in the NW. I agree with most of sirdakka's constructive pointers but I enjoyed your quirky grid!

Welcome to MyC, ConManAU, and thank you for a challenging puzzle with lots of stuff to enjoy. I particularly liked 1a, 10a, 11a, 2d (once I had revealed the answer), 4d, 16d, 18d, 22d, 24d, 25d, 26d. I am afraid I disagree with Tink- I think this grid is horrible both for the setter and for the solver. For the setter because it leaves you having to clue a lot of 3-letter words; for the solver because you have a majority of unchecked letters in a lot of clues. Spoilers in reply.
