Fun. 2d has UK-isms I don't know but I got there quickly from crossing words.

Good crossword, particularly liked 1d and 2d. Not sure I would call it a beginner crossword, more intermediate. It's been over 30 years since I was a beginner, so not sure!

Peterbob here. I've done a number of your puzzles now and enjoyed them all. I think you've called this one correctly. I'm very much in the same boat as you and would appreciate feedback on the Quick Crossword I'm about to publish (Oct 3) because I'm finding it hard to gauge the appropriate difficulty level.
