Special Instructions: Each across clue leads to a word that when (a) written in lower case, and (b) further modified, provides the grid entry. Each down clue generates an extra letter of wordplay, and in order these spell out the required modification. Pen and paper might be handy.

Setter

Not a spoiler, but this was inspired by two things: first, a chat with the setter Soup as part of the York crosswording event a couple of weeks ago, and second a quote from my mate Fez along the lines of “Can a crossword be TOO silly?” 🤪

I had a similar idea a while back, but abandoned it with too few suitable clues and no idea how to construct a full puzzle. But I’m delighted that you’ve managed it! Superbly well done!

Really fun - I've tried in the past to think of ways to use this device, but never quite figured it out

I’m really impressed at how fair this remained while handling the difficult extras

Impressive to have managed to create a grid with such a restriction, very well done Henri!

Well played.

Phew, Henri! Another gem that really is more extraordinary than silly. For once the instructions helped rather than baffled me and getting 2d & 4d early combined with the use of lower case gave me an idea of what was needed. That doesn't mean it didn't take some unravelling still, but what impressive imagination and execution!
