Well, you did threaten me with this, and though I didn't explicitly promise to try solving your experiments (read: forgot to reply), I can hardly turn them down! Like others, I couldn't parse 1a, even if I did correctly guess both what it had to be and where its extra letter was coming from, so hats off to that little bit of cleverness. The overall puzzle idea was, naturally, fab - from my own selfish/greedy perspective, please, feel free to keep throwing up puzzles like this!

Ingenious as ever Henri, but pitched at a higher level of solver than me, so after a couple of successes I largely ended up revealing and parsing. Still fun though and the whole idea is v clever!

Thanks Henri for the fun. I couldn't parse 1a but I guessed it from the definition. I had enough from the other clues to solve 4d. Pretty clever construction!
