Welcome to the site, Gillafox. I don't know whether the SI indicate that this is a one off or whether we'll be seeing more of you? I hope we do: this was a solid first puzzle with some very neat bits in it. A few quibbles but nothing to prevent a solve, even without the personal knowledge. I am sure the recipients will enjoy it. I agree with the detailed feedback that you have already had, so will just focus on some favourites: 9a, 26a (good revision!), 1d 14d (slightly loose def forgiven), 4d and 18d.
