I want to thank Blah for test-solving this puzzle! He's been kind to identify the problems with some of the original clues and answer my questions along the way. As always, if you have any feedback, feel free to leave some in the comment section. Spoilers below:

Thanks Feline, a very good and always apt theme, nicely executed. Reminded me how much of the theme had disappeared into my increasingly large 17a. 24d and 28a very good.

This was right up my street! I love a special instruction, and the theme is a favourite of mine. Favourites: 12a, 28a and 24d. Further comments in reply, a bit spoilery 😁

Oh, neat, you found a way of getting brainrot into a puzzle like you wanted to! The special instruction clues are gentle enough that the theme slid into place nice and early, and I honestly found that enough to help me with the tricksier thematic answers; whenever I found myself with some weird crossers, I said "that's probably because of the theme" and, well, I was always right. I agree with the others that 28a & 24d are podium-worthy, with 13d rounding mine off. Thanks for the good fun!

Nicely done, Feline. Nice theme treatment - tbh, it was something I read more than 40 years ago and never chose to re-read so some of the detail was lost to me but the main elements of the puzzle made sense. Faves inc 14a, 23a, 5d and COTD 24d. Thanks. PM
